A wealthy Arab who <\/span>at death left his stable of seventeen <\/span><\/p>\n

beautiful horses to his<\/span> three sons. He specified that the eldest<\/span><\/p>\n

was to have one half <\/span>the horses, the next one third, and the<\/span><\/p>\n

youngest one ninth.<\/span> The three young heirs were in despair,<\/span><\/p>\n

for they obviously<\/span> could not divide seventeen horses this way<\/span><\/p>\n

without calling in the butcher. They finally sought the advice <\/span><\/p>\n

of an old and<\/span> wise friend, who promised to help them. <\/span><\/p>\n

HOW DID HE HELP THEM<\/span><\/p>\n

ANSWER FOR THE OLD ARAB PARADOX<\/span><\/p>\n

He arrived at the<\/span> stable the next day, leading one of his <\/span><\/p>\n

own horses. This he<\/span> added to the seventeen and directed <\/span><\/p>\n

the brothers to make<\/span> their choices. The eldest took one<\/span><\/p>\n

half of the eighteen, or<\/span> nine; the next, one third <\/span><\/p>\n

of<\/span> the eighteen, or six; and the<\/span> youngest, one ninth of<\/span><\/p>\n

the<\/span> eighteen, or two. When all<\/span> seventeen of the <\/span><\/p>\n

original<\/span> horses had been chosen, the<\/span> old man took his own <\/span><\/p>\n
